Jake Meginsky's artistic work explores the power of sound to alter and heighten human perception, pattern recognition, and psychophysical experience. As a composer, performer and sound installation artist, he attempts to frame the specific conditions by which we experience the act of listening as a fully embodied phenomenon, combining computer software and hand-built electronics with various physical materials and locales, including everyday objects, architecture, and nature, in pursuit of both revealing and amplifying their hidden sonic qualities and inherent vibratory essence.
For his installation as part of the Live from Culture Hole series, Meginsky will present a work that seeks to directly engage listeners with the normally unheard sonic properties of everyday structures and settings by using pure electronics and electro-magnetic transducers to set architectural spaces and materials into vibration. In this work, all musical elements of each piece--pitch, rhythm, duration and timbre--are determined by the physical qualities of the vibrating objects and/or spaces themselves. This project exists as a dynamic intersection of music, sound and architecture.
Through this installation Meginsky will be furthering his studies into the nature and aesthetic potential of resonant frequencies--nodes of stored vibrational energy which, when activated, have the ability to reverberate and reinforce themselves at higher amplitudes when the stored energy is released. Resonance, one of the most mysterious and poetic physical properties of sound, occurs in all types of vibrations or waves when one vibrating system or object drives another to spontaneously oscillate at specific frequencies directly related to its physical properties.
Meginsky will seek out and determine the resonant frequencies of the component objects used in the installation and of the architectural space of Culture Hole itself. In this way, the tonal content of the piece will be determined by the resonant frequencies inherent in the objects/spaces as described above. The duration of each discrete vibrational event will be defined by the actual geometry of the resonating material.
By approaching Live from Culture Hole in this fashion, Meginsky's composition/installation is intrinsically site-specific. It creates a sonic environment that uses only the unique physical attributes embedded within the work itself. The objects reveal their normally veiled sonic potential, both altering and amplifying the listener's experience of Culture Hole's unique architectural environment, and continually locating the act of listening in the present moment as the piece unfolds over time.
