BLACK ROCKER a performance by Kevin Beasley, 6pm - midnight
Join New York artist Kevin Beasley for a newly commissioned performance installation that emphasizes the physicality of sound and explores the sonics of how one arrives to some type of American-ness through a culture dependent upon notions of blackness. Beasley's sculptural installations and performances have been included in recent internationally renowned exhibitions, such as at the 2014 Whitney Biennial, New York; the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland; and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York.
Poems on Demand, 7-10pm
Austin-based Typewriter Rodeo will be on hand to write custom spontaneous poems, on any topic you want or inspired by a work of art, on their beautiful vintage typewriters.
African Art Sketching Party, 7-10pm
Before we close our African Galleries for reinstallation, join artist Ellen Soderquist to sketch your favorite African artwork. Leave your masterpiece with us and then see it on display to the public this summer! All materials will be provided.
Kool-Aid Man in Second Life Tours, 9pm
In conjunction with the exhibition Mirror Stage: Visualizing the Self After the Internet, Montreal-based artist Jon Rafman will perform as the iconic Kool-Aid Man as part of his ongoing performances within Second Life—an online virtual world. Join Rafman as he explores the user-created online community, seeking out lesser-known areas and subcultures in the hidden corners of this vast landscape. DMA audiences will virtually join the artist for a guided tour of the elaborate fantasy worlds of Second Life, blurring the lines between our online and offline lives in the digital age.
