On October 15, as part of AURORA 2013 programming, Dr. Charissa N. Terranova, Assistant Professor of Aesthetic studies at UT Dallas, interviews New York media artist and painter John Ensor Parker.
Join AURORA Artist Talks for a discussion on the history, meaning and physics of light art, and discover the significance of light installation in the context of contemporary public art today. AURORA Artist Talks are a new contribution to AURORA programming in the week leading up to the free and public all-night annual art event, taking place on October 18, 2013. The educational talks were initiated to facilitate awareness of today’s contemporary arts. AURORA 2013 is a district-wide art event featuring nearly 90 site-specific light, sound and visual installations across a 19-city block area of downtown Dallas.
John Ensor Parker is a member of 3_Search, a media art collaborative that also includes curator Leo Kuelbs and Glowing Bulbs. This innovate group collaborates in making art move through the kinetics of light and digital technology, collectively presenting large, audacious and public works. Their video and light pieces have spanned full city blocks and made city monuments, like the Manhattan bridge anchorage, come alive with light and electricity.
As part of Aurora 2013 and made possible by The Dallas Morning News, 3_Search will be creating a massive light-art projection, “Blueprints and Perspectives” onto the façade of the Wylie Theater in the heart of the Dallas Arts District.
Interviewer Dr. Terranova writes and lectures about contemporary art and architecture. Her book Automotive Prosthetic: Technological Mediation and the Car in Conceptual Art offers a new approach to contemporary intersections of art and technology, conceptual art and new media theory. She is an internationally recognized critic and curator based in Dallas.
Spearheaded by Pennington and co-founders Joshua King and Veletta Forsythe Lill, with support from The Dallas Morning News, The Dallas Art District, the Dallas Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, and AT&T Performing Arts Center, AURORA is modeled after all-night events known as Nuit Blanche (French for “White Night” or “Sleepless Night”) that take place annually in some of the world’s greatest cities, and are renowned for their innovative interpretations of the art festival.
